Where We'd Go For Cocktails In The Peak District

Traditionally, the Peak District hasn’t been known for its cocktails. Pints by the fire have long dominated the drinks scene - and if you were lucky, you might have found a decent G&T.
But that’s changing. And we’re here for it.
Whether it’s a night out with friends or just an excuse for something a little different, here are the best places for a cocktail in the Peak District.
Bank House
Main Road, Hathersage
Honestly, Bank House is one of the best bars in the Peak District, with an extensive and genuinely exciting cocktail list. You’ll find all the classics done well, alongside more playful signatures - and the list is long enough that you’ll probably need a second round just to make a dent.
If you’re out with a group, the cocktail tree is a fun touch (still something of a rarity in the National Park). And if you’re feeling peckish, the small plates - think Korean chicken, gambas and crispy lasagne bites - are perfect alongside a drink or two.
Losehill House
Edale Road, Hope
Losehill House is one of those places that feels tucked away, even though it’s surprisingly easy to get to. Set against the hills of Hope Valley, it’s hard to beat for views - especially if you can get a seat by one of the big bay windows.
We love that many of the cocktails are built around Peak District spirits and producers. Expect thoughtful, well-balanced serves like a Lychee Martini with local gin or a citrus-led Snake Pass Sour. It’s the kind of place where one drink easily turns into a long, relaxed afternoon - and if you stay for food, you won’t regret it.
Red Lion Bar & Restaurant
Darley Road, Stone Edge
The Red Lion at Peak Edge has been around for decades - and for good reason. It’s warm, welcoming and reliably good, with a bar that feels just as suited to a casual drink as it does a full evening out.
The cocktail list covers all the classics, alongside a few more distinctive house options, and there’s something particularly nice about pairing a drink with oysters or a few small plates before settling in properly.
The Maynard
Main Road, Grindleford
The Maynard is perfectly placed for an after-walk drink, sitting just moments from Padley Gorge and Longshaw Estate (where Netflix's latest Pride and Prejudice adaptation was filmed recently). It’s a lovely setting inside, but on a sunny day the outdoor space really comes into its own - easily one of the best places to sit with a drink in the area.
Cocktails here lean towards the classics, all made properly. If you’re in the mood for a good Martini, Margarita or Aperol Spritz, you’re in safe hands.
The Cupola
The Dale, Stoney Middleton
The Cupola brings something a little different to the Peak District. Set on the site of a historic smelting mill, there’s a strong sense of character here, with interiors and menus that nod to its past.
Cocktails are fun, easy-drinking and crowd-pleasing - the kind you’ll order without overthinking it. We struggle to visit without adding a pizza or one of their legendary smash burgers into the mix, and with regular live music, a quick drink can easily turn into a late night!
The Merchant’s Yard
St John's Yard, Bakewell
The Merchant’s Yard is a firm favourite with locals, and being based in Tideswell means it often feels a little less crowded than some of the busier spots nearby.
The cocktail offering is high quality without being overcomplicated - a good mix of classics, spritzes and house signatures that work well with the food. And food is very much part of the experience here. You can stop in for a drink, but it’s just as easy to settle in for the evening, with dishes that strike a nice balance between refined and relaxed.
Special Mention: The Charleston
Rutland Square, Bakewell
The Charleston isn’t open just yet, but it’s already shaping up to be one of the most exciting additions to the Peak District drinks scene.
From what we’ve heard, the cocktail list will focus on classic serves with a bit of theatre - including a smoked Old Fashioned served under a dome, plus some innovative specials. Add in live music, a 1920s-inspired interior and an all-day menu (we’ve already got our eye on the chicken and waffles), and it’s very much one to watch. We can’t wait.
The Peak District might still be best known for its pubs, but if cocktails are what you’re after, you won’t be short of options - you just need to know where to go.
