Everyone knows Higger Tor, but have you explored Carl Wark too?

Just across the moor from its much more famous neighbour, Carl Wark is an ancient hillfort surrounded by gritstone, heather and some absolutely cracking views across the Peak District.

We did the two together on a gorgeous sunny day last weekend and it’s such a good little adventure. You can take the easier paths around the rocks or add in a bit of scrambling if you fancy it, and the stretch between Higger Tor and Carl Wark is so lovely when the heather is out as it is right now.

And that view back towards Higger Tor from Carl Wark… 😍

Everyone heads to Monsal Dale Weir in the Peak District (near Ashford-in-the-Water)... and don’t get us wrong, we love it there too. However, we often turn the other way. 👇

Even on one of the busiest summer days of the year, we saw just two other people on this gorgeously peaceful little riverside walk beneath Headstone Viaduct.

You’ll find wildflowers, birdsong, beautiful views of the River Wye, rainbow trout at certain times of the year and one of the most impressive perspectives of the viaduct that most visitors never see.

It’s only around 1.5 miles, making it the perfect addition to a visit to Monsal Head or the Monsal Trail. Fine for little legs as well as big ones.

Little Miss Dutch has just opened in Buxton, bringing authentic Dutch favourites including freshly made poffertjes, stroopwafels, homemade cakes and savoury snacks to the Cavendish Arcade.

The café was created in memory of owner Charlotte’s late Dutch father and brother, making it feel even more special.

but they looked like they could have
been wading around in the balmy waters of the Med some of them were even channeling that vibe with palm trees and other beachy accoutrements!) An impressive effort.

For this week’s review on The Good Life List, we walked across the fields to The Packhorse Inn in Little Longstone for a Father’s Day dinner.

This lovely meal started with Korean BBQ chicken tacos, followed by bavette steak with chimichurri, house fries and tenderstem broccoli, before finishing with lemon and elderflower polenta cake and blackcurrant sorbet.

There was also an excellent Derbyshire lamb porchetta special, a very good cheeseburger from the children’s menu, a couple of games of Uno, a glass of New Zealand sauvignon blanc and the most beautiful walk home through the Peak District on the longest day of the year.
