A Few Questions With...FatBuns

A new bakery and café has opened in the heart of Hartington, bringing fresh cinnamon rolls, homemade bakes and breakfast favourites to one of the Peak District’s prettiest villages.
The cinnamon rolls are already attracting queues, and if you arrive early enough, there’s a good chance you’ll catch trays of warm bakes coming straight out of the oven. We caught up with co-founder Jordan Allcock to chat about FatBuns, fresh baking and why Hartington already feels like home.
First things first. Tell us a little about yourself and FatBuns.
“My name is Jordan Allcock. I’ve been a chef for around 10 years, but baking is something I’ve taught myself along the way.
“FatBuns started as a home bakery business, making fresh bakes and sweet treats, and it’s grown from there really.
“We’ve always had a passion for proper food, fresh bakes and creating things people genuinely enjoy. Opening the shop has been a big step for us, but it’s been amazing to see how quickly people have got behind it.”
Why Hartington?
“Hartington actually came about in quite a lovely way. Our landlord owns the nursery that our little boy attends, and we had taken some of our bakes in from our home bakery business. From there, she presented us with the opportunity of taking on a shop in Hartington.
“We’re honestly so pleased she did. The village has been incredibly supportive from the start, and we already feel really welcomed.
“It feels like the right place for FatBuns to grow, and we’re excited to bring something fresh, warm and homemade to the village.”
What should people try first?
“Definitely our cinnamon rolls.
“They’ve been so popular already and seem to have created a real buzz. We make them fresh every day, and they’re soft, fluffy and full of flavour.
“They’ve become one of the things people are really talking about, so we’d say they’re a must-try for anyone visiting us for the first time.”
What are you most excited about right now?
“We’re really excited to bring new menu items in and to keep growing the business.
“At the moment, we’re still right at the beginning, but the response has already been amazing.
“We’ve got so many ideas for new bakes, fresh food, breakfast options and lunch items, and we’re looking forward to seeing what people love.
“It’s exciting to build something from scratch and watch it develop with the support of the local community.”
What do you want people to know before they visit for the first time?
“We pride ourselves on fresh bakes and fresh food. Everything is made with care, and we want people to feel like they’re getting something properly fresh when they visit us.
“If you come first thing at opening, you’re guaranteed to get fresh, warm bakes straight from the oven.
“We’re a small business and we bake fresh, so once things sell out, they sell out - but that’s because we care about keeping the quality high.”
