A Few Questions With… The Next Chapter, Bakewell

A new independent bookshop has opened in Bakewell’s Granby Arcade, bringing pre-loved books, gifts and Becky’s much-loved ‘Blind Dates With A Book’ concept to the town centre. We caught up with owner Becky for a few questions about the story behind The Next Chapter.

Why Bakewell?

“I’ve grown up around Bakewell and the surrounding villages, and it has always been a special place to me. My parents used to have a stand at the Bakewell Monday Market, so it feels incredibly meaningful to now have my own little shop here.

“I also live locally, so opening the shop in Bakewell felt really important to me. I love that I now get to meet both locals and visitors to the area every day.”

What should people try, buy or browse first?

“I started nearly four years ago just creating my ‘Blind Dates With A Book’, travelling to different markets and events with them, so they’ll always be something really special to me and probably the first thing I’d recommend people browse when they come in.

“But there’s a real mix of things throughout the shop. We stock new and pre-loved books across lots of different genres, as well as book-themed gifts including mugs, Kindle stickers and bookmarks.

“I’ve tried to make sure there’s something for everyone and for all budgets too, whether someone is treating themselves or buying for someone else.”

What are you most excited about right now?

“Honestly, just being surrounded by books and fellow readers every day.

“I’m a huge reader myself and reading has always been how I relax, so being able to spend my days talking about books with other people genuinely feels like a dream.”

What do you want people to know before they visit?

“I want people to know that no matter what they read, or how often they read, they’re still a reader and they’ll always be welcome here.

“And for anyone who thinks they don’t enjoy reading, I honestly think it might just mean you haven’t found the right book yet - and I’d love to help people discover one they connect with.

“I’m also incredibly grateful for all the support, kind messages and encouragement already. It truly means the world.”
