There was a time when every café seemed to have a milkshake menu. These days, it's iced matchas, pistachio lattes, frozen lemonades and elaborate iced coffees that are having their moment. Summer drinks have become more creative than ever, but somewhere along the way, the humble milkshake quietly slipped down the menu. And we think that's a shame.
Thankfully, it hasn't disappeared altogether. Whether you like yours thick and simple or piled high with whipped cream and sweet treats, there are still some brilliant milkshakes to be found across the Peak District. You'll even find one blended with pieces of Bakewell Pudding, another made using award-winning Jersey milk, cream and gelato, and a few colourful creations that are almost too good-looking to drink. Here's what we're ordering the next time that milkshake craving strikes.
The Old Original Bakewell Pudding Shop
The Square, Bakewell
If anywhere was going to create a Bakewell Pudding milkshake, it was always going to be here. Alongside classic chocolate, vanilla and strawberry milkshakes, the menu also features the gloriously indulgent Bakewell Pudding Freakshake. The creamy ice cream shake is blended with pieces of the bakery's famous handmade Bakewell Pudding, bringing together the town's signature dessert and one of summer's best treats in a single glass. If you're looking for something with a little extra kick, there's also a Tipsy Bakewell Shake made with Bakewell Pudding Rum (erm...yes please).

Ewe & Me
Hartington
Hartington's food scene just keeps getting better. Joining the village's much-loved cheese shop, cafés and pubs, Ewe & Me is a family-run newcomer serving thick, creamy milkshakes from its shop just behind the famous Hartington Cheese Shop.
The business is the dream of husband-and-wife team Annmarie and Philip, who wanted to create somewhere locals, walkers and visitors could stop for an indulgent treat after exploring the Peak District. The name reflects both their farming life - "Ewe" is a nod to the family's sheep - and the idea of bringing people together. As they put it, it's about "You and Me" just as much as "Ewe and Me".
The milkshakes are every bit as cheerful as the branding. Recent specials have included a Trifle Milkshake topped with whipped cream, strawberry sauce and rainbow sprinkles, alongside flavours such as Chocolate, Banana & Salted Caramel, Bubblegum and the brilliantly named Baa-noffee. Add ice cream, warm crumbles and other sweet treats to the mix, and this is another excellent excuse to make Hartington part of your next Peak District day out.

Tagg Lane Dairy

Tagg Lane Dairy has built a loyal following for its award-winning Jersey ice cream, so expectations are understandably high when it comes to the milkshakes. Thankfully, they deliver. Known as Cloud Shakes, they're made using the dairy's signature gelato soft, fresh Jersey milk and rich Jersey cream, creating an incredibly thick, velvety shake that's a cut above your average ice cream blend.
There are five flavours to choose from - Oreo, Lotus, Coffee, Chocolate and the signature Jersey Gold, which showcases the rich flavour of the dairy's own Jersey milk. If you're looking for a proper premium milkshake rather than something thin and overly sweet, this is the one we'd be ordering.

The Cupola
The Dale, Stoney Middleton
One of the reasons we love The Cupola so much is that the specials are always changing. During the warmer months, the kitchen puts together some fantastic limited-edition milkshakes alongside the regular menu, giving visitors a reason to try something new each time. Recent creations have included a Honeycomb Biscoff Milkshake loaded with honeycomb ice cream, alongside a vegan Vanilla Biscoff version and gluten-free options, so nobody has to miss out.

Noonology

If you're all about variety, head straight to Noonology. The menu includes everything from Oreo, Nutella and Biscoff to pistachio, peanut butter and banana, salted caramel and chocolate orange, all made with premium ice cream and ready to customise if you're feeling adventurous.

Mad Hatter
34 Crown Square, Matlock
If subtle isn't your style, Mad Hatter is calling your name. The Alice in Wonderland-inspired café has built a loyal following for colourful freakshakes piled high with whipped cream, cakes, biscuits and sweets, with the Cookie Monster version becoming one of its best-known creations. It's impossible not to smile when one arrives at your table. Embrace your inner child, take a few photos and forget about counting calories for an afternoon.

Sacro Lounge
22-23 Springs Shopping Centre, Buxton
This is a café that doesn't overcomplicate things and that's why we like it. Sacro Lounge sticks with a trio of classics - Cookie Dough, Double Chocolate Oreo and Strawberries & Cream - each topped with whipped cream and a biscuit. They're familiar flavours, done well, and perfect after a morning wandering around Buxton.

The Derbyshire Emporium
Bakewell
Once you've browsed the shelves filled with locally made gifts, artwork and produce, this popular café serves classic chocolate, vanilla and strawberry milkshakes topped with whipped cream, sprinkles and chocolate flakes. The Derbyshire Emporium is a lovely alternative to some of Bakewell's busier cafés and a great excuse to support another independent business while you're in town.

f'coffee
6 Horse & Jockey Yard, Ashbourne
Yes, it's technically a smidge outside the national park, but it's so flipping good that we had to include it . f'coffee has become known for imaginative seasonal drinks, with recent specials including a Cherry on Top milkshake finished with whipped cream, cherry sauce, marshmallows and a fresh cherry. While you're there, don't ignore the iced coffee specials either. They're every bit as creative as the milkshakes and have built quite a following of their own.
